Beginning at the age of 9, I became the world’s biggest Elvis fan. As far as I was concerned, nobody could compete with the golden voice of The King. Then at age 23, I happened to borrow a CD of an artist named Orion. The voice that came out of the speakers just blew me away. As a diehard Elvis fan, I knew his voice well an could tell the voice I was hearing was not Elvis. At the same time, there was much of the same quality in the vocals, that Elvis had. The more I listened to this new golden voice the more fascinated I became. Who was this guy? What was his story? And so began a 12-year long pursuit of the man behind the mask, which now comes to fruition in the pages of this book.
Finding the history of Jimmy Ellis aka Orion has certainly not been easy. During my research, I have read every— thing I could find about Jimmy Ellis and Orion. Unlike Elvis, where every detail of his life is known, it was just the opposite with Jimmy Ellis. I found out that his story was full of factual errors and myths, not the least of which were black holes. To tell his story properly, I had to be thorough and go directly to the people who knew him personally. It has taken me years to find the names, and to locate everyone who contributed to this book. Research started in 2004 and has continued right up to 2016.
I never got to meet Jimmy Ellis, but I now feel I was a personal friend of his for all the hours we spent “together” via concert recordings, videotapes, and interviews. I have also discovered all the unfair treatment he received by the music industry, media, and perhaps especially from Elvis’ fans, who have not quite managed to swallow his fictional character of Orion. Many have challenged him for trying to cash in on Elvis and to take his place. I hope that after reading this book, there will be a more enlightened view of a man, who struggled all of his life to escape the shadow of Elvis; and to be acknowledged as a serious artist. Hope you enjoy it!
